Locks rarely fail all at once. The key starts to catch, the deadbolt needs a shove to close, the handle droops a little more each month. Then one evening it quits with you on the wrong side of the door. Master Locksmith repairs house locks across Silver Spring and the surrounding area, and a lot of what looks like a broken lock turns out to be a door that has shifted, a strike plate that has moved, or a cylinder that needs cleaning and a few new parts.
When a repair makes sense, we do it. When it doesn’t, we say so and show you why. We work on knobs, levers, deadbolts, handle sets, mortise locks and patio door locks in homes across Montgomery County, Prince George’s County and the District, and as far as Baltimore and Northern Virginia. You can reach us at (301) 888-5152 from 8am to 8pm, Monday through Saturday.

Why Repair Before You Replace

A good lock can last for decades with a bit of care. A repair visit is often all it takes to get yours working like it used to.

Finding the Real Cause

Before touching the lock, we check how the door hangs, where the bolt meets the strike and how the key moves in the cylinder. Fixing the cause is what keeps the problem from coming back in a month.

Keep the Hardware You Like

If you picked your handle set to suit the house, or it came with an older home you love, a repair keeps it on the door. We replace worn springs, pins and screws instead of the whole lock.

Door Adjustments Included

Wooden doors swell in humid Maryland summers and shrink in winter. Adjusting the hinges, moving the strike plate or opening up the bolt hole often fixes a deadbolt that refuses to close.

Plain Advice on Repair or Replace

Some locks aren't worth fixing, and some cheap locks cost less to replace than to repair. We'll tell you plainly which side of that line yours falls on.

Common Parts on Hand

Strike plates, springs, screws, cylinders and spare latches ride along with us. That means fewer second visits while you wait for a part to arrive.

Signs Your House Lock Needs Repair

Call before a small problem locks you out. These are the warning signs we see most.

Key Is Hard to Turn

A key that sticks or needs jiggling usually points to tired pins, grit in the cylinder or a key that has worn down. We clean the lock, use the right lubricant and replace parts as needed.

Deadbolt Won't Close Smoothly

If you have to lift or push the door to throw the bolt, the bolt and the strike aren't lined up. We adjust the strike, the hinges or both.

Loose or Sagging Handle

Knobs and levers work loose as their screws and springs wear. Left alone, the latch can stop pulling back at all. We tighten, rebuild or replace the parts inside.

Broken Key Stuck Inside

Don't try glue or pliers, which usually push the piece deeper. We extract the broken part, check the cylinder for damage and make you a fresh key.

Lock Damaged by Forced Entry

After a burglary or an attempt, locks, strikes and frames are often bent. We repair what can be saved, reinforce the strike with longer screws and replace what can't be fixed.

Patio doors, storm doors and garage entry doors each have their own lock styles. If one of those is giving you trouble, mention it when you call so we bring the right parts.

How We Handle a Lock Repair

1. Call or Send a Request

Reach us at (301) 888-5152 or through the form on this page. Tell us which door it is, what the lock does wrong and how long it's been happening.

2. Get a Clear Quote

We give you a clear quote based on what you describe and confirm it once we see the lock. If the fix turns out to be bigger, you decide before we go any further.

3. A Technician Heads Your Way

Our technician brings parts for the common brands and the tools to adjust doors and strikes.

4. The Work Itself

We take the lock apart if needed, replace worn parts, clean the cylinder and adjust the door so the bolt and latch line up.

5. Testing Before We Finish

We test the lock with your keys from inside and out, with the door open and closed, until it runs smoothly.

6. Before We Leave

Before we leave, we show you what was wrong and what to watch for. If a lock is near the end of its life, you'll hear it from us.

Lock Repair Questions

Should I spray oil into a sticky lock?

We’d skip it. Household oils attract dust and can gum up the pins over time. A little graphite or a dry lock lubricant is a better choice. If that doesn’t help, the lock probably needs cleaning or new parts.

Is it cheaper to repair or replace a lock?

It depends on the lock. A quality deadbolt with worn springs is usually worth repairing. A basic lock with broken parts inside often costs less to replace. If it’s close, we’ll quote both.

Why does my deadbolt only stick in summer?

Humidity makes wooden doors swell, which pushes the bolt out of line with the strike. Adjusting the strike or the hinges usually solves it.
