A car key today is part key and part computer. The chip in the head, the remote buttons and the smart key in your pocket all have to be introduced to your car before they’ll work. Master Locksmith programs car keys and remotes on site, in your driveway or parking lot, for drivers in Silver Spring and the wider DC area. We connect to your car’s diagnostic port, add the new key or remote, and remove lost ones if needed. No trip to the dealer required.
Common reasons to call us: a key cut somewhere else that opens the door but won’t start the car, a replacement fob that won’t pair, a remote that stopped responding after a battery change, or keys that need removing after a theft. Programming visits run Monday through Saturday from 8am to 8pm across Montgomery and Prince George’s counties, the District, Baltimore and Northern Virginia. Call (301) 888-5152.

Why Have Us Program Your Key

Programming is where most online key purchases and hardware store copies get stuck. That’s the part we handle.

Professional Programming Tools

Our programmers connect through the car's diagnostic port and cover a wide range of makes and models, including many that need a security PIN. We program chip keys for many motorcycles as well.

Keys Cut Somewhere Else

Had a key cut that opens the doors but won't start the engine? Its chip still needs to be programmed, and we can usually do that on site.

Lost Keys Removed

If a key has been lost or stolen, we can delete it from your car's memory so it no longer starts the engine.

Push Button Start Keys

We add proximity smart keys to many push start cars and set up the lock and unlock buttons at the same time.

Straight Answers on Tricky Models

A few newer vehicles can only be programmed by the dealer. If yours is one of them, we'll tell you on the phone instead of charging you for a visit.

Keys and Remotes We Program

Each key type talks to your car a little differently. Here’s what programming involves for each one.
Traditional metal key image

Metal Keys Without a Chip

Plain metal keys have no chip, so there's nothing to program. If the car won't start with a good metal key, the fault is somewhere else, and we can help you find out where.

Transponder Chip Keys

We register the chip with your car's immobilizer through the diagnostic port. Some models need a security PIN, which our equipment can often retrieve.

Flip Key Remotes

Two jobs in one: the chip that starts the car and the remote that locks it. We program both and test every button.

All in One Remote Keys

We pair the remote functions and the transponder, which on many cars have to be programmed separately.

Push Start Smart Keys

We add proximity keys to the car's keyless system, so it recognizes the key for entry and for push button start.

Fobik Programming

The Chrysler group fobs that sit in a slot in the dash. They need a PIN to program, which we take care of on site.

Chips in Laser Cut Keys

After the side groove blade is cut, the chip inside still has to be programmed. We do both in the same visit.

Keyless Entry Remotes

Separate keyless entry remotes can often be paired on site. We program new ones and delete any that were lost.

Remote stopped working after you changed its battery? Check the battery type and that it’s facing the right way. If it still won’t respond, the remote may need to be synced to the car again, which we can do.

How Car Key Programming Works

1. Call or Send a Request

Call (301) 888-5152 or send the form with the year, make and model, and let us know if you have a working key or a new fob you'd like programmed.

2. Get a Clear Quote

We check that the key or fob is compatible with your car and quote the job before we come out.

3. A Technician Heads Your Way

We bring the programming equipment to the car, along with a new key or remote if you need one.

4. The Work Itself

We connect to the diagnostic port, add the new key or remote, and remove lost keys if you ask us to.

5. Testing Before We Finish

We test starting, locking, unlocking, the trunk button and the panic button on every key.

6. Before We Leave

We confirm which keys are now registered to the car and hand them all back to you.

Key Programming Questions

Can you program a key fob I bought online?

Often, yes, if it matches your car’s part number or FCC ID and hasn’t already been locked to another vehicle. Send us the listing before you buy and we’ll tell you whether it should work.

Do I need to bring all my keys?

Bring every key you want to keep. On some cars, programming a new key erases any key that isn’t present, so a key left at home could stop working.

Can you program a key if I have no working key at all?

Yes, on most vehicles we can add a key even when none are left. That’s a full replacement, which our car key replacement page explains.
